Curatorial Statement: Gina Washington
It is 2009 and where are we now and what do we call ourselves? Are we too busy to stop and smell the roses, too broke to drop a dollar in the grapevine jar? Are we too tired to turn off the negative speak on the radio and turn on the news about children starving, wars being fought on somebody else’s shore? Are we too busy to stop? As Scot Sykes and I reminisced we discussed the problems of the day in our 15 minute conversation and pondered some solutions. All arrows pointed to change, but what kind, where and from whom? How will change manifest itself in the “Age of Obama?” Change, however, is our only constant and some people have become drones to an existence that leaves them “satisfied by the sound byte,” that someone else has created. This exhibition will examine notions of complacency on a global scale and sprinkle the viewer with bits of transforming change agents so that we are no longer “Satisfied by the Sound byte” but questioning and interacting with our own personal realities while sprinkling the world with seeds of positive impact and meaning.
